Free room-listing sites: what's really free and what to check
Plenty of room and share-house sites call themselves free. Often that means free to look, then pay to talk. Here's what a free room site should actually cover, which costs to watch for, and how MateHaus does it.
What "free" should mean
For renters, a free room site lets you browse every listing, see the full details and photos, and message the person with the room without paying first. For people with a spare room, it lets you post the room with photos and a proper description, get messages and manage the listing without a fee.
If any of those steps sits behind a payment, or a "free" message only unlocks after a waiting period, it isn't really free. It's a trial.
Costs to watch for
- Pay to message. Some sites let you browse for free but charge renters before they can contact a lister.
- Waiting periods. A free message that only unlocks days after a listing goes up means the best rooms are often gone first.
- Subscriptions that renew. Check whether an upgrade is one-off or keeps charging until you cancel.
- Paid listings by default. Some sites let you post for free but keep the useful parts, like extra photos or showing first, for paid listings.
How MateHaus works
- Free for renters: browse rooms, post a room-wanted profile, save searches, get match alerts and message anyone, with no paywall and no waiting period.
- Free for listers: list your room with photos, write the description with AI if you like, or paste an existing Facebook post and the form fills itself in.
- Verified members: everyone verifies their mobile number by SMS code, and every new room listing is checked by the MateHaus team before it goes live.
- Lifestyle match: both sides answer a few quick questions, and each room shows how well you'd likely live together.
- Inspections in the chat: pick an open-for-inspection time or suggest one. Once both of you accept, you each get a calendar invite.
Optional extras, one-off only
Nothing on MateHaus needs to be paid for. If you want more attention, upgrades are one-off and end on their own, so there's nothing to cancel:
- Featured: 15 days, $24.49. Your room is shown ahead of free listings.
- Premium: 30 days, $31.49.
- Boost: 7 days, $10, for a room that's already Featured.
- MateHaus Plus for renters: 30 days, $10. Your profile shows first to listers, with instant alerts.
Stay safe on any room site
- Inspect the room in person before paying anything.
- Keep your chat on the site until you've met.
- Never pay a bond before an inspection, and make sure it's lodged with your state's bond authority.
- Get the rent, bond and bills in writing.
Common questions
Is there a free alternative to paid room and share-house sites?
Yes. On MateHaus, listing a room, posting a room-wanted profile and messaging other members are all free, and renters never pay to see listings or contact listers. The only costs are optional one-off upgrades.
Do I have to pay to message someone about a room?
On some room sites, renters pay before they can message, or wait days before a free message unlocks. On MateHaus, messaging is free for every member from the moment a room or profile is posted.
How do I know a room listing is genuine?
Look for verified members and listings that are checked before they go live. On MateHaus every member verifies their mobile number by SMS code and every new room listing is checked by the team before it is published. Always inspect in person before paying anything.
What does it cost to list a spare room on MateHaus?
Nothing. Listing is free. If you want more attention, optional one-off upgrades are Featured (15 days, $24.49), Premium (30 days, $31.49) and Boost (7 days, $10). They expire on their own, so there is nothing to cancel.
Is MateHaus free for renters?
Yes. Browsing, saving searches, match alerts, posting a room-wanted profile and messaging are free. MateHaus Plus (30 days, $10) is optional and puts your profile first for listers.
Free to list, free to message, verified members.
