Tenants are at breaking point
Domain's chief residential economist Nicola Powell says tenants' ability to absorb more increases is now limiting rent growth. Analyst Cameron Kusher told the ABC renters are moving to cheaper areas, staying at home longer, or moving into share housing.
How to find the right share home
- Decide your budget including bills before you start looking.
- Filter for what matters most: private bathroom, parking, pets or quiet.
- Message a few listings and ask about the people, not just the room.
- Inspect in person and get the rent, bond and bills in writing.
Why sharing makes sense right now
- Lower rent. A room costs a fraction of a whole home.
- Shared bills. Power and internet split several ways.
- Better locations. Closer to work or study than renting alone.
